Location

Technical tour A: Toyota tour

TOYOTA MOTOR CORPORATION Higashi-Fuji TECHNICAL CENTER

TOYOTA MOTOR CORPORATION Higashi-Fuji TECHNICAL CENTER is located at the foot of Mt. Fuji and in wonderful nature. It is an important base with several kinds of proving grounds and a cutting-edge research facility that supports the technology development of TOYOTA. At this time, you can see a 'Driving Simulator' and a 'Crash Test Facility'.

Driving Simulator
With the aim of reducing traffic accidents through the development of active safety technology, Toyota is undertaking development of a device that analyzes the driving characteristics of drivers and then uses this information as a means to discover effective ways of reducing accidents. The driving simulator provides one of the world’s most realistic simulated driving environments, designed to be as indistinguishable as possible from driving in real life in order to accurately gauge specific driving characteristics. The driving simulator uses video, an acceleration simulator and other technology to simulate driving. Examples of how the driving simulator is used include allowing vehicle researchers and developers to perform necessary driving tests that are dangerous to perform with a real vehicle or tests that require specific driving conditions.
Crash Test Facility
This facility can conduct reconstructed condition experiments and component tests of various forms of accidents in the market, in order to develop safe vehicle structures that contribute to reducing casualties, in the unlikely event of a collision. There is a crash test dummy maintenance site for the experiments as well.

Technical tour B: Nissan tour

NISSAN INTELLIGENT FACTORY

Simultaneous Underfloor Mounting Operation (SUMO)
Remote equipment maintenance

Since its foundation, Nissan has honed its ability to manufacture vehicles through high quality and highly efficient production processes and the superb skills of the company’s takumi (master technicians). However, the business environment surrounding manufacturing is undergoing major changes. In Japan, there is a need to break away from conventional labor-intensive manufacturing to cope with an aging society and serious labor shortage. Unforeseen situations, such as climate change and pandemics, also need to be managed. At the same time, industry trends in electrification, vehicle intelligence and connected technologies are making vehicle structure and functionality more advanced and complex.
Nissan introduced the Nissan Intelligent Factory initiative at its plant to respond to these needs and trends. Nissan Intelligent Factory enables Nissan to:

  • Use robots that have inherited the skills of takumi to manufacture next-generation vehicles; of the highest quality,
  • Create an improved environment where a wide range of people can work comfortably, and;
  • Realize a zero-emission production system, thereby accelerating efforts to achieve a decarbonized society.

In this technical tour, Nissan would like you to take a tour of the newly introduced Nissan Intelligent Factory based on these concepts.

Technical tour C: Denso tour

Denso Global R&D

Haneda Innovation City

Proving ground
Automotive service building

In April 2018, Denso set up Global R&D Tokyo near Shinagawa Station, to conduct R&D mainly on automated driving. The newly established Global R&D Tokyo, Haneda will have an office to design and develop automated driving technology, an automotive service building to carry out works including installing prototype systems in vehicles, and a proving ground to conduct in-vehicle tests. With these two facilities, Denso will build a framework to seamlessly implement projects in the Tokyo metropolitan area, ranging from R&D to in-vehicle tests, to accelerate its technological innovation.
Designated as a National Strategic Special Zone, the Haneda area in Ota City is creating an enabling environment for field tests on public roads, including those on automated driving. Moreover, Ota City is home to many manufacturers. Denso will utilize the special zone system and collaborate with such manufacturers in the city and neighboring communities.
